Choosing the Right Time to Plant
In Boston's climate, early spring (March-April) provides ideal conditions for tree planting. The soil is workable, temperatures are moderate, and spring rains help with establishment. However, avoid planting during periods of excessive rainfall when soil is waterlogged.
Site Selection and Preparation
- Assess sunlight exposure throughout the day
- Check for underground utilities (Call Dig SafeĀ® at 811)
- Ensure adequate distance from buildings (at least 15-20 feet)
- Test soil drainage and pH levels
Soil Preparation Techniques
Urban soils often need improvement before planting:
- Remove construction debris and compacted soil
- Incorporate organic matter to improve structure
- Create a planting hole 2-3 times wider than the root ball
- Maintain natural soil depth when planting
Planting Process
- Water the tree thoroughly before planting
- Remove container/burlap carefully
- Position tree at proper height, slightly above grade
- Backfill with original soil, avoiding amendments
- Create a 3-inch mulch ring, keeping mulch away from trunk
Post-Planting Care
Critical first-year care includes:
- Regular watering (15-20 gallons weekly)
- Monthly inspection for problems
- Stake only if necessary, remove after one year
- Protect from lawn equipment damage
